Breathlessly whirling with Georgette Heyer’s Cotillion
Recommended for first time initiates to Heyer. Another one I loved was Meg, Freddy’s older pregnant sister, who made a very good companion and friend for Kitty, and who had random mood swings.
I loved that Freddy seems at first a bit ridiculous himself, and maybe stupid, but he turns out to be perfectly suited to the society he lives in, perfectly capable of getting Kitty out of any scrapes she gets into, and of orchestrating everyone’s happy endings.
Heyer is a delightful author for all ages, with wonderful characters and good plots. Kitty is a naive, caring country girl who convinces mild-mannered Clark Kent – oops, I mean Freddy to engage in a fake betrothal with her so she can escape her miserly adopted uncle and enjoy some time in London. That explains a lot.
Got too kind a heart! Kitty really was quite adorable.

Yet now I find it even more brilliant. I used to think P G Wodehouse is without peer when it comes to creative use of the English language and comedic entanglements, but “Cotillion” is a fine example for me of a succesful challenge to his elevated position. Freddy undergoes a strong metamorphosis as he begins to recognize his own ability to manage his world and put his imprint on it.
The unconvensional and quite unexpected hero, but you can’t help but to heher him too. Ok, just for Cotillion alone I may become a Heyer fan after all. You know, Kit, that’s a dashed good book!
And that leaves Jack, romantic, devastating, dashing and uncontrollable, and he will not be told when and where to make a proposal ueyer marriage, especially since he feels sure that Kitty, who has adored him since childhood, will be his for the taking whenever he feels ready to drop the handkerchief.
Certainly didn’t plan on marrying. You can watch Persuasion online.

I still cannot fathom why they describe this book as a fairy-tale plot or light as a bubble, cotilliob it’s always easy to see why men could enjoy her subtle, super-understated, now-hardly-visible romances. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life.
